SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM WEST FLORIDA

FLORENCE – A trio of homeruns propelled the sixth-ranked University of North Alabama softball team to a pair of home wins over West Florida on Saturday. Brooklynn Clark, Madeline Lee and Reagan Tittle each homered during the 3-0 and 7-3 victories to give UNA a 23-4 record on the season and claim its fourth straight Gulf South Conference series. The Lions are now 9-2 in league play.

Hillary Carpenter pitched a complete-game shutout in the opener while Raven Cole held the Argonauts to just two hits in the nightcap. Clark was 3-for-6 on the day, including her team-high fifth homerun of the season. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

In the first game, the Lions did all of the scoring in the first two innings. After Courtney Shields drew a one-out walk, Clark drilled a 2-2 pitch over the left centerfield fence to give UNA a 2-0 lead. Lee led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer to make the score 3-0 and neither team scored again.

Carpenter worked the full seven innings to improve to 10-2 on the year. She struck out four and walked two while scattering three hits. The win was her 50th career victory at UNA.

Clark finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with the two RBI. Harlie Barkley also went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

The Lions were in a familiar position in the second game, holding a 3-0 lead late in the contest. Amy Carden led off the bottom of the third inning with a single, following by a walk by Baily Nelson. Tittle then gave UNA the three-run lead with a homerun to left center.

The Lions held the lead until the top of the fifth. West Florida's Jessica Wilkinson broke up Cole's no-hitter with a single to start the rally. The Argonauts added a walk and had another batter get hit by a pitch before Kathleen Smiley's three-run double to right center tied the game at 3-3.

Cole was able to recover and get the final out. She retired six of the next seven UWF batters while the Lions responded with four more runs down the stretch.

In the bottom of the fifth, UNA took advantage of an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball to score two unearned runs and regain the lead. In the sixth, Nelson singled home a run and reached third base in the process. She advanced to second on the throw home and third on another UWF error before eventually scoring on another passed ball to give the Lions a 7-3 lead.

Seven different players had one hit each for UNA. Cole walked five and allowed just two hits to improve to 12-1 on the season. She added three strikeouts.
