COZART GETS 100TH WIN AS LIONS COMPLETE SWEEP

FLORENCE – North Alabama head softball coach Ashley Cozart recorded her 100th win at the school with an impressive mercy-rule victory over West Florida on Sunday, completing a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep. The sixth-ranked Lions pounded out 14 runs on 12 hits in the 14-5 home victory. With the win, UNA is now 24-4 on the season with a 10-2 record in GSC play.

North Alabama went through three UWF pitchers, pulling away by scoring nine runs over the final two innings. A three-run home run by Harlie Barkley gave the Lions the walk-off victory.

West Florida (19-7 overall, 7-5 GSC) entered the series on an 11-game winning streak and was receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Argonauts were able to take an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning.

UNA answered by plating five runs in the bottom of the frame. The Lions had four hits and took advantage of two UWF errors in the inning highlighted by Mackenzie Roberts' two-run single to right center. All five runs were unearned.

The Argonauts were able to pull even by scoring a single run in the top of the third inning and two more in the fourth. UNA, however, responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame.

Reagan Tittle scored from third on a passed ball and Anna Gayle Norris later connected on a two-out, three-run home run to give the Lions a 9-5 lead. After a scoreless top half of the fifth inning, UNA put the game away with five runs off five straight hits in the bottom half.

Consecutive singles by Bailey Nelson, Courtney Shields and Tittle loaded the bases before a two-run double by Brooklynn Clark gave UNA an 11-5 lead. Barkley then hit her first homer of the season to end the game.

For the day, Norris was 3-for-3 with a single, a double, a homerun and four RBI. Tittle and Clark each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Hillary Carpenter (11-2) came on in relief of starter Hannah Bodenhorn to get the pitching victory. She pitched the final 1.2 innings and struck out three batters without yielding a run.

UNA will travel to Montevallo for two games on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. The Lions will return to GSC play the following weekend with a three-game series at Lee.
