LIONS STRUGGLE AT THE PLATE IN LOSSES TO USI

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team's bats were held in check Tuesday in a pair of home losses to Southern Indiana. The Lions recorded one run off seven hits as USI recorded the 3-0, 6-1 sweep to open its season. The two losses leave UNA with an 8-4 record on the year.

In the opener, UNA didn't get a runner to second base until the bottom of the seventh inning. Trailing 3-0, the Lions got a two-out single by Anna Gayle Norris. Shelby Woodard as then hit by a pitch, moving pinch runner Lexie Norfleet to second and bringing the tying run to the plate.

USI pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt, however, wrapped up the complete-game shutout with a strikeout to end the game. North Alabama recorded only three hits in the game. Norris went 2-for-3 with singles in the fourth and seventh innings.

Hillary Carpenter took the loss in the circle. She allowed three runs off six hits over seven innings of work. Only two of the runs were earned.

The Eagles took advantage of a UNA error and scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning. USI held the 1-0 lead until a two-out, two-run home run by Mena Fulton in the top of the seventh accounted for the final score.

In the nightcap, UNA grabbed a 1-0 lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sydney Sanders led off the frame with a single before pinch runner Destiny Wright reached second on a sacrifice bunt. Bailey Nelson then drove in the run with an RBI-single up the middle.

Southern Indiana responded with six unanswered runs. After tying the game with a single run in the top of the fourth inning, the Eagles used a four-run fifth to take control. Another run in the top of the sixth put the finishing touches on the sweep.

After the third inning, UNA was held scoreless with only a single hit. Shelby Woodard was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to represent half of the Lions' four hits in the second game.

Marissa Honeycutt (1-1) took the loss. She scattered five runs on seven hits over the first 4.2 innings of work.

UNA will now turn attention to its Gulf South Conference schedule. The Lions will travel to Carrollton, Ga., to open league play Saturday at West Georgia. The two teams will play a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. (Eastern) the first day. The series will conclude with a single game at 1 p.m. (Eastern) on Sunday.
