UNA WOMEN TOP VSU TO CLINCH TOURNEY BERTH

FLORENCE – KeKe Gunter scored 29 points and the University of North Alabama women's basketball team clinched a spot in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament with a 70-52 victory over Valdosta State Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall.
 
With the win, the Lions improve to 18-8 overall and 12-8 in GSC play. The Lions move into a tie with West Georgia for fourth place in the league standings.
 
Against Valdosta State, UNA led from wire to wire. The Lions led 22-14 at the end of the first quarter and held a 36-29 lead at the break. VSU got within two points midway through the third quarter after a basket cut the lead to 38-36 with 4:23 remaining.
 
UNA answered when Savannah Stults started a 7-0 run with a transition basket. After a defensive stop, Gunter connected on a three-pointer. Ivy Wallen then grabbed a defensive board and went coast to coast to give the Lions a 45-36 lead with 1:04 left in the period.
 
The Blazers got within five early in the fourth quarter before an 11-0 spurt by UNA pushed the lead to double digits for good. A trey by Jaclyn Heath started the run. Back-to-back baskets by Wallen were followed by a jumper by Gunter. Wallen capped the run by grabbed another defensive board and starting a fast break. She found Stults for another transition basket to give UNA a 58-42 lead with 3:19 remaining.
 
Gunter, who just missed a career-high of 30, was 10-of-21 from the floor with a trio of three-point baskets. She added nine rebounds, two assists and a steal on the day.
 
Wallen added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions, who shot 44.1 percent from the floor as a team.
 
Valdosta State (17-9 overall, 14-6 GSC) was led by Keny Samone' Dixon's 15 points.
 
UNA will travel to Union on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. on the UU campus in Jackson, Tenn.
