SOFTBALL BATS COME ALIVE IN SWEEP OVER MILES

BIRMINGHAM – The University of North Alabama softball team scored 21 runs of 28 hits in a double-header road sweep over Miles College on Thursday. The 11-1, 10-0 victories give the Lions a 12-5 record on the season.

UNA pulled away late in the opener before getting a mercy-rule win in the nightcap. The Lion bats hit eight home runs on the day while pitchers Raven Cole and Hannah Bodenhorn combined for a no-hitter in the second game. Marissa Hancock was 5-of-7 with a pair of home runs and six RBI. Shelby Woodard and Lexie Norfleet also had two homers each. Hillary Carpenter also added a complete-game victory in the opener for North Alabama.

In the first game, the Lions took a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning before scoring six runs to put the game out of reach. UNA scored 11 runs off 15 hits, including Hancock's 4-for-4 showing at the plate. The junior from Geraldine had three singles and a home run. She also drove in four runs for the game.

As a team, UNA hit four home runs in the game, including two from Norfleet. She connected on a solo shot in the sixth inning before hitting a three-run homer in the top of the seventh. Woodard hit the other home run for the Lions, leading off the third inning with a solo shot to left field.

North Alabama plated single runs in the top of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Two runs in the sixth inning gave the Lions the 5-1 lead before the six-run seventh sealed the win. Anna Gayle Norris and Reagan Tittle each went 2-for-4 with an RBI each, while Norfleet rounded out the top hitters with a 2-for-5 showing.

Carpenter improved to 5-3 on the season with the complete-game victory. She scattered five hits while walking two and striking out seven on the day.

In the nightcap, UNA plated runs in the top of the first four frames, including a two-run first inning. After a two-out walk by Norfleet, Woodard hit a shot to left field to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

After an RBI-single by Bailey Nelson made the score 3-0 in the top of the second, a four-run third inning broke the game open. Hancock's second homer of the day was a two-run shot that also scored Woodard. Tittle followed with a walk before Hannah Shollenberger homered to left field to make the score 7-0.

Amy Carden led off the fourth with a double to right center before scoring on a single by Nelson. Three batters later, Norris hit her fourth home run of the season. The two-run blast to right field wrapped up the scoring on the day.

In the circle, Cole (5-1) worked the first four hitless innings, striking out five. Bodenhorn retired three straight batters in the bottom of the fifth to complete the win.

Nelson and Woodard each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Shollenberger finished the nightcap 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

UNA will return to Gulf South Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at home against Shorter. The Lions will host a double-header Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing the series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
