SOFTBALL DOWNS SPRING HILL, FALLS TO MOBILE

GULF SHORES – After getting a 5-4 walk-off victory over Spring Hill, the University of North Alabama softball team was held to one run off five hits in a 5-1 loss against Mobile to split the second straight day at the Gulf Coast Invitational. The second straight 1-1 showing gives the Lions a 2-2 start to the season.
 
In the opener, UNA carried a 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning before the Badgers scored twice to tie the game. Hannah Shollenberger, however, answered for the Lions by leading off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to left field. It was the second homer of the season for the freshman from Florence.
 
Bailey Nelson was 3-for-4 with an RBI against Spring Hill. She was the only UNA player, however, with multiple hits in the game.
 
After Spring Hill took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Lions answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-double by Mackenzie Roberts.
 
The Badgers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth before UNA took its first lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning.  A run-scoring infield-single by Amy Carden, an RBI-ground out by Madison Daniel and an RBI-single by Nelson gave the Lions the 4-2 lead.
 
Spring Hill tied the game with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh. An two-run double followed an error and an infield hit to tie the score.
 
Hillary Carpenter (1-1) got the complete-game victory after scattering nine hits over seven innings. She struck out five batters and only allowed two earned runs.
 
In the nightcap, Mobile scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning and three in the seventh to secure the 5-1 victory. At the plate, the Lions were held in check by Ram's ace Sydney O'Connor.
 
The lone run for UNA came in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Shollenberger drew a two-out walk, she scored on an RBI-double by Anna Gayle Norris. The run briefly cut the Mobile lead to 2-1. The Lions, however, would not score again while the Rams added a trio of insurance runs in the seventh inning.
 
Raven Cole (1-1) took the loss in the circle after working 6.1 innings. She allowed five runs off four hits with six walks and four strikeouts. Five different players had one hit each for the Lions.
 
North Alabama will close out play at the event with two more games Sunday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. UNA will play Rollins at 9 a.m. before facing No. 22 Missouri-St. Louis at 11:30 a.m.
