LEE TAKES TWO GAMES TO COMPLETE SOFTBALL SWEEP OVER LIONS

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team was held to three runs in two games in a pair of Gulf South Conference home losses to Lee on Saturday. The 3-0, 4-3 losses capped a three-game sweep for the Flames, which moved into second place in the GSC standings. UNA falls to 16-10 overall and 6-6 in league play.

The losses mark the first series defeat for UNA since losing two of three games to Shorter the final weekend of the 2015 regular season. It is also the first time since the Lions have been swept since dropping three straight games to Valdosta State in March of 2015.

In the first game, the Lions were held scoreless for the fourth time this season. Lee pitcher Taylor Moran tossed the complete-game shutout to improve to 3-1 on the year.  UNA recorded six hits and loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and six innings, but could not score. Madison Daniel was 2-for-4 at the plate.

Raven Cole (5-4) took the pitching loss for the Lions. She struck out eight and walked six in seven innings of work. Two of the runs were earned.

Lee took advantage of a three-run home run in the top of the first inning and held off a late UNA rally to complete the sweep in the second game. After the two teams traded runs to make the score 4-1, the Lions got within striking distance late in the game.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Marissa Hancock hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run to right center. The next four UNA batters, however, failed to reach base, preserving the one-run win for the Flames.

North Alabama got its other run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI-ground out by Bailey Nelson. For the game, five different players recorded one hit each for the Lions.

UNA will host West Alabama next weekend in another three-game GSC series.
