LION SOFTBALL FALLS TWICE TO UAH

FLORENCE – Alabama-Huntsville had 11 hits in each game during a 13-6, 10-3 double-header sweep over North Alabama Saturday in Gulf South Conference softball action. The two home losses leave UNA with 22-12 overall record and 12-8 mark in GSC play. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single contest at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

In the opener, the Chargers used a six-run fourth inning to take control. After entering the frame in a 2-2 tied, UAH sent 10 batters to the plate, taking advantage of three hits, a pair of walks and two hit batters. The big hit came from Brooke Miller, who connected on a three-run double to right field.

After UNA answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning, another UAH run in the top of the fifth gave the visitors a 9-3 lead. A three-run home run by Sydney Sanders in the bottom of the fifth inning cut the lead to 9-6 before the Chargers used a four-run seventh to put the game out of reach.

Sanders finished the opener 2-for-3 with three RBI. Reagan Tittle was also 2-for-3 at the plate while Marissa Hancock also drove in a run during a 2-for-2 showing.

Hillary Carpenter took the loss in the circle for the Lions. She worked the first four innings, allowing eight runs off five hits to fall to 12-5 on the season.

In the second contest, UAH scored 10 runs over a four-inning span to break open a scoreless game. The Chargers scored four runs in the top of the third inning before adding three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 10-1 lead.

North Alabama avoided the mercy-rule defeat by plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth but could get no closer. Sanders homered for the second time, sending a two-run shot to center field. UNA's other runs came via an RBI-single by Sabrina Gilliam in the bottom of the third inning.

Mackenzie Roberts led the way at the plate in the nightcap, posting a 3-for-3 showing with a double and two singles. Gilliam also singled and scored on Sanders' homer in the sixth inning to finish the game 2-for-4 at the plate.

Raven Cole (7-5) worked all seven innings to take the pitching loss for the Lions. She allowed 10 runs off 11 hits with seven walks and a pair of strikeouts.
