UNA SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM UNION

JACKSON, Tenn., – After rallying to win the opener 9-8, the University of North Alabama softball team completed the sweep at Union on Friday with a 5-3 victory in the second game. The two wins give UNA a 26-14 overall record and 16-10 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

Shelby Woodard and Marissa Hancock combined for eight hits, six RBI and two home runs on the day.

In the opener, the lead changed hands five times, including a three-run top half of the seventh inning that put UNA ahead 9-8. After being relieved from the circle in the fourth inning, Raven Cole re-entered to pitch the bottom of the seventh. She retired three of five batters to get her first save of the season. Hillary Carpenter worked the middle three innings from the circle to get the win and improve to 13-6 on the year.

UNA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI-single by Hancock. After a four-run second inning gave Union a 4-1 lead, the Lions closed the gap with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Another RBI-single by Hancock and a sacrifice fly by Reagan Tittle made the score 4-3.

North Alabama plated three runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 6-4 lead. All three runs were unearned after the Lions loaded the bases with two outs. UNA scored two runs on a passed ball and another on an error to reclaim the lead.

After scoring a single run in the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs took an 8-6 advantage with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Union strung together three straight hits and also scored a run from third base on a wild pitch in the frame.

Facing a two-run deficit, UNA began the seventh inning with two walks and two singles. After missing six games due to an injury, Anna Gayle Norris returned to the lineup and recorded an RBI-single up the middle to start the rally.

After a sacrifice fly by Mary Graves tied the score at 8-8, Hannah Shollenberger doubled to move pinch-runner Katie Parr to third base. Sabrina Gillum then singled up the middle to score Parr and give the Lions the 9-8 lead.

Hancock was 2-for-3 at the plate in the first game. Norris and Bailey Nelson each went 2-for-4 while Gillium was 2-for-5. Cole and Carpenter combined for eight runs off nine hits with six strikeouts.

In the second game, Hannah Bodenhorn took a 5-0 shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning before a three-run home run by Gabby Morris go the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Although the two-out homer broke Bodenhorn's streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings, the sophomore still recorded the win to improve to 5-1 on the season.

UNA did its scoring in the top of the second, third and fifth innings. After a leadoff single by Woodard in the second frame, pinch-runner Destiny Wright score on Shollenberger's single to right field.
In the third inning, Woodard made the score 4-0 with a two-out, three-run home run to left field. A solo homer by Hancock wrapped up the scoring for the Lions.

Woodard was 3-for-3 while Hancock was 2-for-3 in the second game. Bodenhorn recorded her third straight complete-game victory. She scatted eight hits with four strikeouts.

The two teams will play a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. to wrap up the three-game series.
