BALANCED ATTACK KEEPS UNA WOMEN PERFECT AT DSU

CLEVELAND, Miss., – All five starters reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team picked up a 74-49 Gulf South Conference road win at Delta State on Thursday. The win gives the Lions a 13-0 start to the season with a 6-0 mark in GSC play and sets up a key showdown on Saturday against nationally-ranked Union.
 
On Thursday, UNA took control with a 29-9 third-quarter showing. The two teams were tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter, and UNA led 32-22 at the half. Brittany Panetti scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the third period as North Alabama seized momentum.
 
After DSU scored the first basket of the second half, the Lions reeled off 16 straight points. A basket by Panetti gave UNA a 48-24 lead with 5:41 remaining in the quarter.
 
The Lions continued to pull away. After a layup at the third-quarter buzzer by Ivy Wallen made the score 61-31, a basket by Kenysha Coulson early in the fourth gave the Lions their largest lead of the game.
 
The Lady Statesmen could get no closer than 23 down the stretch. DSU shot 34 percent from the floor in the second half, including an 0-for-6 showing from three-point range.
 
Wallen, Ansley Eubank and Emma Wallen added 11 points each as North Alabama used a balanced scoring attack. Michaela DeKilder also reached double digits with 10 points for the Lions. For the game, UNA shot 50 percent from the floor and held a 36-31 edge in rebounding.
 
Alexis Ross led Delta State (5-7 overall, 3-3 GSC) with 17 points.
 
Union will come to town on Saturday with a 12-1 overall record and 5-0 mark in GSC play. The winner will take sole possession of first place in the league standings. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 24 in the nation by the WBCA and hold a No. 8 ranking in the D2SIDA Media Poll. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
