HILLSIDE, N.J. --
Anna Bove' and
Kylie Huey combined on a pair of goals to give the sixth seeded University of North Alabama a 2-1 win over third seeded Kennesaw State in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 ASUN Conference Women's Soccer Championships.
The win sends the Lions into the semifinal round on Sunday against host and No. 2 seed New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). The two teams played to a 0-0 tie on the same field last Sunday in the regular-season finale for both schools. The winner of Sunday's noon semifinal match will advance to meet the winner of the Nashville bracket that includes No. 1 Lipscomb, No. 4 Flordia Gulf Coast and No. 5 Liberty. That championship match will be on November 3 and will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
Should North Alabama win the ASUN championship, the Lions are not eligible to advance to the NCAA Tournament since the Lions are in their first year of a four-year transition into NCAA Division I.
Playing in its first season in Division I and the ASUN, UNA got a goal at the 28:55 mark of the first half from Bove' to break a team scoreless streak that lasted 374 minutes, dating back to a Bove' goal against Jacksonville on October 12 in a 1-0 UNA win. It was Bove's fifth goal of the season and was assisted by Huey.
In the second half, UNA extended its lead to 2-0 at the 61:21 mark as Huey scored her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Bove'.
Kennesaw State answered with a goal just over a minute later, at 62:27, to cut the lead in half. Erin Harris scored her sixth goal of the season unassited to trim UNA's lead to 2-1.
The UNA defense held on from there and the Lions'
Shelby Thornton finished the night with five saves.
It was the second time this season that UNA defeated Kennesaw State 2-1. The Lions also knocked off the Owls back on September 23 in Florence.
