SOFTBALL LIONS TOP NO. 18 VALDOSTA STATE 9-2

MONTGOMERY – Five different players posted multiple hits as the University of North Alabama softball team recorded a 9-2 win over Valdosta State Saturday on the opening day of the 2018 Gulf South Conference Opening Weekend Festival in Montgomery.  The win gives UNA an 8-2 record on the season with a 1-0 start to GSC play.

Against VSU, the Lions scored runs in the five of the seven innings, including a four-run second to grab the lead for good. Hannah Shollenberger went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBI. She had RBI-singles in the top of the first and second innings. Her first hit gave the Lions and early 1-0 lead and her second kept a two-out rally going in the second frame.

After VSU scored twice in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead, Bailey Nelson, Kara Brewer and Shollenberger each drove in runs with singles up the middle. Nelson's hit drove in two runs while Shollenberger's chased VSU starting pitcher Kathryn Carter from the circle.

Valdosta State (11-3) loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but could not plate a run. The Lions added single run in the top of the fifth and sixth innings before a two-run seventh inning put the game out of reach.

Brewer led off the fifth with a single and later scored on an error. Alex Brown led off the sixth inning with a solo homerun to center field. In the seventh, Shollenberger drew a walk before Shelby Woodard connected on a two-run homer to give UNA the 9-2 lead.

Nelson, Brewer, Brown and Mackenzie Roberts all had two hits each for the Lions. In the circle, Laken Distefano (3-0) came on in relief to get the win. She pitched 5.2 innings, scattering two hits with three strikeouts.

UNA will remain in Montgomery for two games at Lagoon Park on Sunday. The Lions will play Union at noon and Auburn-Montgomery at 2:30.
