SOFTBALL LIONS DOWN MOBILE, FALL TO SAINT LEO

GULF SHORES – After knocking off Mobile 5-0 in the early game, the University of North Alabama softball team dropped a 6-2 decision to Saint Leo Saturday at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores. The split gives the Lions a 2-2 record on the season.

In the nightcap, SLU pitcher Alison Mitt scattered four hits and struck out six to keep the UNA batters in check. Saint Leo plated single runs in the top of the first, second and fourth innings before using a three-run seventh to put the game out of reach.

Kara Brewer's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning represented the only offense for the Lions. The senior from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., hit a shot to left center after Bailey Nelson drew a leadoff walk and briefly pulled North Alabama to within a single run at 3-2.

Mitt, however, retired the next six batters while SLU took advantage of a UNA error and added three runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Brittany Ledbetter (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Lions. She pitched the first four innings before Veronica Westfall came on in relief. At the plate, four different UNA players had one hit each.

Against Mobile, UNA freshman Laken Distefano tossed a complete-game shutout. She struck out five and allowed only four hits in seven innings of work. Two of the four hits came in the bottom of the seventh inning, when the Rams threatened but could not cross home plate. Distefano improves to 1-0 on the season.

North Alabama jumped out to a quick lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Shelby Woodard and Veronica Westfall each picked up RBI-singles to give UNA the 2-0 advantage. Woodard doubled the lead for the Lions in the top of the fifth with a two-run homerun to left center.

The final run came in the sixth inning. After a leadoff single by Katie Eakes, pinch-runner Harley Stokes scored on an RBI-single by Bailey Nelson.

Woodard finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI. Nelson and Reagan Tittle also added two hits each.

UNA will wrap up play in Gulf Shores with two games on Sunday. The Lions will face Eckerd at 9 a.m., followed by a 1:30 matchup against Spring Hill.
