LION SOFTBALL OPENS CHILLOUT WITH TWO WINS

HUNTSVILLE – Following a 6-3 win over No. 6 Southern Indiana, the University of North Alabama softball team defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 9-0 to open play at the 2018 Charger Chillout 2.0 with a 2-0 record Thursday at the Kiwanis Sportsplex in Huntsville. The two wins give UNA a 5-2 record on the season.

In the opener, UNA got six runs off eight hits against the sixth-ranked Screaming Eagles. Mackenzie Roberts was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Shelby Woodard hit a two-run home run for the Lions.

A two-run second inning gave UNA an early 2-0 lead. The two-out rally started with Veroncia Westfall reaching base on an error. She moved to second base on a single by Alex Brown before scoring on a hit to left center by Roberts. Brown later scored on a USI throwing error to give UNA the two-run lead.

Southern Indiana responded by scoring three runs in the top of the third inning to re-take the lead. An RBI-single and a two-run double made the score 3-2 before UNA answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.

The Lions quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff walk by Hannah Shollenberger, Woodard's two-run shot to dead center gave UNA a 4-3 lead. Reagan Tittle also walked and later scored on another USI error to increase the make the score 5-3.

The final UNA run came in the sixth inning. After a leadoff single by Roberts, pinch-runner Madison Daniel was sacrificed to second and moved to third before scoring on an RBI-single by Kara Brewer.

Laken Distefano (2-0) got the pitching victory by scattering two hits over four innings. Brewer also went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

Against Kentucky Wesleyan, two UNA pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout while the Lions bats scored early and often. Brittany Ledbetter (1-1) got the win after scattering three hits over the first four innings of play. She added five strikeouts before Westfall came in to pitch the final two innings.

At the plate, North Alabama used a four-run first inning to grab momentum early. The Lions got four hits in the frame. After scoring the first run of the game on an error, UNA extended the lead to 2-0 on an RBI-single by Tittle. Two batters later, Brown singled up the middle to score two more runs.

In the third inning, Woodard drew a leadoff walk before pinch-runner Destiny Wright came in and reached third base before stealing home to give the Lions a 5-0 lead. Bailey Nelson made the score 6-0 in the fourth. She singled and later scored on an RBI-single by Shollenberger.

A three-run sixth inning evoked the mercy rule for the Lions. After the Lions loaded the bases, freshman Harley Stokes drove in all three runs with a triple to right center.

Nelson and Brewer had two hits each to lead the way at the plate.
