LIONS FINISH UNBEATEN AT CHARGER CHILLOUT

HUNTSVILLE – The University of North Alabama softball team recorded two more victories Friday on the final day of the UAH Charger Chillout. The Lions defeated Bellarmine 11-1 and Henderson State 7-2 to wrap up play as the only undefeated team at the event.

UNA is now 7-2 on the season and will turn its attention to next weekend's Gulf South Conference Opening Weekend Festival in Montgomery. A scheduled home double-header against McKendree on Sunday has been cancelled.

On Friday, the Lions opened with an 11-1 mercy-rule victory over previously unbeaten Bellarmine. UNA had 11 hits in just four innings, including seven that went for extra bases. Reagan Tittle was 3-for-3, including an inside-the-park home run. Veronica Westfall and Meleah Hargett also each went 2-for-2 with two RBI.

North Alabama used a six-run second inning to take control, sending 10 batters to the plate in the frame. After Bellarmine plated a single run in the top of the third, the Lions responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning gave UNA the 10-run lead. After pinch-hitter Katie Eakes hit the first pitch over the fence, Tittle followed with a shot to gap in left center. The rounded third and beat the throw home to give the Lions an 11-1 lead.

Megan Garst pitched four innings to get the win. She struck out seven to improve to 3-1 on the season. Brittany Ledbetter retired the side in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Tittle just missed hitting for the cycle with a single, a double and the home run. Bailey Nelson also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a single and two RBI.

Against Henderson State, the Lions scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a close game. UNA led 4-2 heading into the inning before getting four hits and taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Reddies in the frame.

Single runs in the top of the first and second innings gave the Lions an early 2-0 lead. UNA loaded the bases before Alex Brown was hit by a pitch to score the game's first run. In the top of the second, Nelson recorded a two-out double before scoring on an error.

After HSU cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning, North Alabama added two runs of its own in the top of the fourth. Henderson State got its final run in the bottom of the inning.

Ledbetter (2-1) got the pitching win in relief. She allowed one hit in 2.1 innings of work. Laken Distefano started and pitched the first 3.2 innings. She scattered three hits and struck out five with two walks.

At the plate, nine different UNA players had one hit each.
