JSU EDGES UNA SOFTBALL TEAM 2-1 IN EIGHT INNINGS

MONTGOMERY – The University of North Alabama softball team opened play at the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament Friday with a 1-0 loss to Jacksonville State at Montgomery's Lagoon Park. The nightcap against the host Hornets was rained out, leaving the Lions with a 5-1 record on the season.

In the opener, Jacksonville State hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie. UNA scored a single run in the bottom of the frame and left runners at second and third to end the game.

Megan Garst (1-1) was stuck with the loss despite taking a no-hit bid into the top of the seventh and allowing only two hits the entire game. The junior from Columbiana worked all eight innings, striking out 11 batters.

UNA held a 6-2 advantage in hits, but could not plate a run until the international tie-breaker rule placed runners at second base to start the eighth inning. The Gamecocks (4-2) got two quick outs before Bailey Smart hit a two-run shot to left field to give JSU a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eight, an RBI-single by Danielle de Ruiter scored pinch-runner Mary Grayson Kilpartrick from third to cut the Jax State lead in half. After Chloe Deerman reached on an error, a groundout by Meleah Hargett moved runners to second and third before JSU starter Faith Sims recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. Sims finished the game with nine strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the season.

At the plate, de Ruiter finished the game 2-for-3 with a single, a double and an RBI.

UNA will play UT-Martin and Purdue-Fort Wayne Saturday on the ASU campus.
