UNA WOMEN DROP ROAD MATCH AT SOUTH ALABAMA

MOBILE – South Alabama raced out to a 3-0 lead before holding off the University of North Alabama women's tennis team 5-2 on Thursday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts in Mobile. With the loss, UNA falls to 2-3 on the season.

The Jaguars (8-0) got control of doubles with quick wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. With the doubles point clinched, the No. 1 spot was stopped. 

Leading 1-0, USA quickly increased its lead to 3-0 with straight-sets wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles. The remaining four courts were competitive. With the Lions ahead in three of the remaining four matches, the Jaguars clinched the match with a win at No. 2 singles.

North Alabama got its two points from freshman Sydney Flesch and senior Nele Seitz. Flesch controlled her match from the start and won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Seitz started fast and held on for a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 win at No. 4 singles. 

The Jaguars were able to take the final point at No. 5 to finish the scoring. 

"South Alabama came out strong and we never responded," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "That was not how we wanted to get started. I was concerned about how we would respond in singles, but they really stepped up. Syd and Nele were tough today, and I thought Meg also played well losing in a third-set breaker. South Alabama is a very good team. I thought we got better today."
 
The UNA women will return to action Thursday at Mississippi State. The two teams are scheduled for a double-header set to begin at Noon on the MSU campus in Starkville.
