MISSISSIPPI STATE SWEEPS UNA WOMEN’S TENNIS

STARKVILLE, Miss., – Mississippi State improved to 9-2 on the season with a pair of victories over the University of North Alabama women's tennis team in a Saturday double-header  at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre in Starkville. The 0-4, 0-7 losses give UNA a 2-5 record on the season.
 
"I really liked our energy against an outstanding Mississippi State team," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "They are a very talented and well-coached team, but we really got after it today. I saw positive things on every court."
 
In the opener, Mississippi State took the early lead with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match was stopped with MSU leading 5-2.
 
The Bulldogs swept singles play to secure the win, clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Five of the six matches were straight-sets wins. UNA's Megan Humphreys represented the final match to end. Playing in her home state, the freshman from Madison, Miss., came up short in a third-set tiebreaker.
 
"Megan backed up her solid play at South Alabama with another solid day," added Bishop. Even though she lost the third-set breaker, she was right there with the MSU player point for point."
 
The second match ended when Mississippi State clinched with a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs won the top two doubles matches before getting singles wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 2 to clinch the win.
 
UNA will travel to Jacksonville State on Wednesday. Match time is set for noon on the JSU campus.
