SOFTBALL WINS TWO AT CENTRAL ARKANSAS TOURNEY

CONWAY, Ark., – The University of North Alabama softball team outscored its opponents 18-1 on Sunday, opening the Michelle Short Memorial Collegiate Classic with mercy-rule victories over Jackson State and Central Arkansas. The Lions knocked off Jackson State 8-0 in five innings before defeating host Central Arkansas 10-1 in six innings to improve to 8-2 on the season.
 
Against Jackson State, Sidney Revels pitched a one-hit shutout to improve to 2-0 on the season. The freshman from Bonifay, Fla., struck out 11 batters in five innings of work.
 
After Lexie Harper scored the game's first run with an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the third inning, the Lions used a seven-run fourth inning to take control. UNA sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame and scored all seven runs with two outs.
 
Harley Stokes got things going with a two-run homer to left field. The two-out blast also scored Alex Brown and gave the Lions a 3-0 lead. UNA, however, was not finished scoring in the inning.
 
Chloe Deerman walked to reach base before scoring on a pinch-hit RBI-single by Katie Eakes. Harper followed with a two-run single to left field to give the Lions a 6-0 lead.
 
A triple by Meleah Hargett scored Harper from second base. Hargett then scored on an infield single by Veronica Westfall.
 
North Alabama finished the game with nine hits. Harper and Hargett each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
In the second contest, Central Arkansas was able to extend the game with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With UNA leading 8-0, the Bears' Kaylyn Shepherd broke up a no-hit bid by Megan Garst with an RBI-double to right center.
 
UNA responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to evoke the mercy rule for the second time on the day. Garst finished with 11 strikeouts to improve to 3-1 on the year.
 
The Lions took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Harper led off the game with a triple down the right line, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hargett.
 
A four-run third inning gave UNA a 5-0 lead. Harper singled to lead off the frame and later scored on a UCA error. The Lions loaded the bases before getting a two-run single by Hannah Shollenberger and another RBI-single by Chloe Kirkland.
 
In the top of the fifth, Hargett drew a bases-loaded walk before a single up the middle by Veronica Westfall gave the Lions an 8-0 lead.
 
After UCA extended the game with the lone run in the bottom of the fifth, North Alabama scored twice in the sixth to put the game out of reach. A double by Shollenberger and a two-run home run by Kirkland wrapped up the scoring on the day.
 
Kirkland finished the second game 4-for-4 with three RBI. Westfall, Shollenberger and Harper also added two hits each.
 
UNA will remain in Conway to play South Dakota State on Monday. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at Farris Field on the UCA campus.
