FLORIDA GULF COAST SWEEPS UNA TENNIS

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's and women's tennis teams each came up short at home against Florida Gulf Coast this week in ASUN Conference play. The UNA women lost a 6-1 decision while the men's team was defeated 7-0.
 
Playing singles first, the Eagles were able to clinch the match with straight-sets victories in the first four matches. UNA was awarded the first point by default at No. 6 singles.
 
At the No. 2 position, Sydney Flesch won the opening set 7-6. FGCU's Sara Kelly, however, rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set, then won a 10-6 tiebreaker to give the Eagles a 5-1 overall lead. Florida Gulf Coast (8-8 overall, 3-2 ASUN) finished the scoring by securing the doubles points with wins at the top two spots.
 
With loss, UNA falls to 5-14 overall and 0-4 in ASUN play.
 
The UNA men also fell behind early after playing singles first. FGCU remained undefeated in ASUN play by winning all six singles matches. Five of the contest were straight sets.
 
After dropping the opening set at the No. 1 position, Jason Pimenta forced a tiebreaker with a 6-3 win in the second set. FGCU's Juan Montes, however, secured the sweep with a 10-6 win for the Eagles.
 
Florida Gulf Coast (9-8 overall, 4-0 ASUN) won all three doubles matches to complete the sweep. UNA falls to 2-14 overall and 0-4 in ASUN play.
 
Both North Alabama tennis teams will host NJIT on Saturday. The men are scheduled to play at 10 a.m. with the women following at 2 p.m. at the UNA Varsity Tennis Courts.
