LIONS END SEASON WITH 5-2 LOSS IN ASUN TOURNEY

FORT MYERS, Fla., – North Florida used a four-run third inning to grab the lead before holding on for a 5-2 win over the University of North Alabama softball team Friday in an elimination game of the ASUN Conference Tournament. With the loss, UNA closes out its first Division I season with a 26-20 record.
 
All of the scoring came in the first three innings as the two teams traded leads early in the contest. The Osprey used a pair of singles sandwiched around a stolen base to score the game's first run in the top of the first inning.
 
North Alabama used a two-out rally to grab the lead in the bottom of the second. Veronica Westfall was hit by a pitch before consecutive singles by Riley Grace Honeycutt and Mackenzie Roberts loaded the bases. A hit to left field by Danielle de Ruiter then scored two runs for the Lions.
 
UNF regained the lead in the top of the third inning. After the Osprey loaded the bases, Paige Pfent connected on a grand slam down the left field line. It was the second pinch-hit homer against the Lions this season for Pfent, who hit a three-run shot on March 23 in Florence.
 
UNA threatened but could not score again. The Lions left eight runners on base, including a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff double by Meleah Hargett and an infield single by Lexie Harper brought the tying run to the plate with one out. The Ospreys, however, ended the game with a double-play to advance to the next round.
 
Alex Brown led UNA at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Laken Distefano (4-3) took the pitching loss after working the first 2.2 innings in the circle.
