UNA VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO MEMPHIS, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

MEMPHIS, Tenn., - The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened play at the 2019 Beale Street Challenge with a pair of losses on Friday. The Lions fell to host Memphis and Southeast Missouri State by identical 3-0 scores to fall to 2-10 on the season.
 
Anna Katherine Griggs had 14 kills on the day while Elizabeth Ford reached double digit dig totals in both matches.
 
In the opener, Memphis dominated the opening set before holding on for a pair of close victories in the 25-14, 25-22, 31-28 win. The Lions hit just .112 as a team but came through with six blocks and seven service aces to keep it close.
 
Maggie Sullivan hit .375 for the match and led UNA with nine kills. The freshman from Tuscaloosa added a pair of aces and was in on five of the team's six blocks.
 
Griggs added eight kills, including six in the final set. Ford had 10 digs for the match, while Breylee Linder and Mariana Trujillo had 12 assists and 11 assists respectively.
 
The match against Southeast Missouri followed a similar script. After the Redhawks dominated the first two sets, UNA was competitive in the third before coming up just short in the 25-10, 25-12, 25-23 loss.
 
The Lions struggled at the net, hitting -.012 while SEMO produced eight blocks. The Redhawks also held a 6-1 advantage in service aces.
 
Griggs had six kills to lead UNA. Trujillo turned in 11 assists while Ford tied for a match-high with 11 digs.
 
UNA will wrap up play in Memphis Saturday afternoon with a single match against Toledo. Match time is set for 10 a.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Memphis.
