LIONS FALL TO FGCU IN ASUN VOLLEYBALL OPENER

FORT MYERS, Fla., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team struggled in its ASUN Conference opener Friday evening, falling 3-0 at preseason conference favorite Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles jumped out to big leads in each in the 25-11, 25-9, 25-14 victory. With the loss, UNA falls to 2-12 overall and 0-1 in ASUN play.
 
UNA hit .000 in two of the three sets, and managed only a .038 showing in the opener. The Lions recorded 16 kills on the night, a total matched by FGCU standout Cortney VanLiew. The junior hit .750 for the match and also added a block and an assist.
 
North Alabama had its best showing in the third set. The Lions took an early 3-0 lead before the home team scored 20 of the next 27 points to take control.
 
Sarah-Elizabeth Williams led UNA with five kills. Mariana Trujillo added nine assists while Mackenzie Sullivan totaled eight digs for the Lions.
 
UNA will return to ASUN action Sunday at NJIT. Match time has been moved to 11 a.m. (Central) at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center in Newark, N.J.
