WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOWS NJIT 57-55 FOR TIBER’S 300TH WIN

NEWARK, N.J., - North Alabama took the lead with a basket in the closing seconds and NJIT missed a shot at the buzzer to give the Lions a 57-55 road win Monday evening in ASUN Conference women's basketball action. The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Lions, who improve to 15-6 overall and 6-3 in ASUN play.

Ivy Wallen had 15 points and eight assists to lead UNA. The senior took an inbounds pass and hit a jumper from the right wing with 8.2 seconds remaining to put the Lions ahead. The Highlanders called timeout to advance the ball to half court, but missed a contested three-pointer as time expired.

The win, along with North Florida's loss at Stetson on Monday, puts UNA back into a tie for second place in the ASUN standings. It also represented head coach Missy Tiber's 300th career coaching victory.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first half. A 19-15 NJIT lead at the 6:00 mark in the second quarter represented the largest lead of the day for the home team. North Alabama closed the half on a 12-4 run to take a 27-23 lead into the break.

The Highlanders were able to tie the game at 30-30 in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Jaida Bond, however, capped another 12-4 spurt by the Lions with a basket to make the score 42-34 with 2:18 left in the period. NJIT closed the gap to 45-40 heading into the fourth quarter.

UNA led 55-50 when the Highlanders made one last push. NJIT got a three-pointer and a jumper in the lane on consecutive possessions to tie the game in the final minute of play and set up Wallen's big shot.

Ansley Eubank added 13 points for the Lions. The senior from Murfreesboro joins the 600-point club for her career, totaling 605 points over the last three seasons. Bond also finished the night with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

UNA will return home to host Liberty on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
