SOFTBALL LIONS TOP WESTERN ILLINOIS, MEMPHIS GAME RAINED OUT

MEMPHIS, Tenn., – After defeating Western Illinois 4-2 on Sunday, the University of North Alabama softball team's final game at the Blues City Classic was rained out, leaving the Lions with a 12-6 record on the season.

Four pitches were thrown by the host Memphis Tigers before lightening in the area forced both teams to the dugouts. After a 29-minute delay, the game was called.

UNA is scheduled to host Alabama A&M on Tuesday, weather permitting.

In the first game, UNA plated two runs each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, then held off the Leathernecks for the victory.

Emma Latham and Harley Stokes had two hits each and the Lions used four different pitchers on the day.

In the bottom of the third inning, North Alabama used a two-out rally to get on the scoreboard first. Stokes doubled to centerfield, then scored on Latham's RBI-single through the right side. Latham reached third on a single by Hannah Shollenberger before scoring on a UWI error to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

UNA did its damage with two outs again in the bottom of the fourth. Lexie Harper led off the frame with a single and reached third before a single by Stokes brought her home. Mary Grayson Kilpatrick also walked in the inning and scored on an RBI-single by Latham.

Western Illinois scored single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, but could not catch up. The Leathernecks had baserunners in every inning and left the bases loaded twice, finishing the game with 11 stranded runners.

Maci Birdyshaw started and pitched the first four inning to get the pitching win for the Lions. She struck out three with one walk without yielding a run to improve to 4-1 on the season. Michelle Moore and Brittany Adair also saw action in the circle before Sidney Revels came in to pitch the final 1.2 innings and get the save.
