WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO FREED-HARDEMAN

FLORENCE – Freed-Hardeman shot 50 percent from the floor and had four players in double figures during a 71-62 win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Monday evening at Flowers Hall. The second straight loss drops UNA's overall record to 2-4 on the season.

The visiting Lions were 29-of-58 on the night, including 48 points in the paint. FHU also had 10 offensive rebounds. It was Freed-Hardeman's first-ever win in Flowers Hall.

North Alabama spent the first half playing catch-up after a slow start. The Lions scored only seven points in the first quarter after connecting on just 3-of-12 shot attempts.

FHU grabbed a 10-point lead early in the second quarter before a 10-3 run by the Lions cut into the deficit. A three-point basket by Julia Strachan made the score 23-20 with 4:37 remaining in the half.

UNA trailed by nine before another run closed the gap to a single possession. Another trey by Strachan made the score 32-21 in the final minute. Freed-Hardeman, however, got a basket on the ensuing possession to take a three-point lead into the break.

The Lions tied the game twice before taking their first lead of the night early in the third quarter. Macey Lee grabbed an offensive rebound and found Strachan in the corner for a three-pointer to put the home team ahead 39-38 at the 7:45 mark.

The lead changed hands eight more times in the third quarter before the visitors got a basket at the buzzer to take a 52-50 lead into the final period.

UNA didn't score for the first 4:05 of the final stanza as Freed-Hardeman built a six-point lead. The Lions managed only four field goals down the stretch and could never pull even. FHU was 7-of-14 down the stretch and regained a double-digit lead in the closing minutes.

Strachan led North Alabama with 17 points. The graduate transfer from Aldelphi was 5-of-11 from three-point range. Jade Moore also connected on four three-pointers and finished with 14 points while Lee turned in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Alexis Callins also scored 12 points to round out the top scorers for the Lions.

Chynia Brooks led Freed-Hardeman (7-1) with 16 points.

UNA will host Oakwood on Dec. 1. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
