MEN’S TENNIS TEAM FALLS AT JSU

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State swept through doubles play, then notched victories in all six singles matches, including a pair of three-set thrillers to claim a 7-0 home win over the University of North Alabama men's tennis team on Wednesday. UNA falls to 0-6 on the season with the defeat.

The Gamecocks opened the match with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles. After securing the overall 1-0 lead with a pair of 6-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, JSU was able to grab the overall win with victories at the No. 6, No. 4 and No. 3 singles positions.

With the overall win already decided, the final three singles matches remained closely contested. After dropping the opening set 6-1 at No. 5, Kyle Johnson forced a deciding set with a 6-4 victory to stay alive. JSU's Thomas Norwood, however, recorded a 6-4 win in the third set to keep the Lions off the scoreboard.

A 6-3, 7-6 Jax State win at No. 2 gave the home team a 6-0 lead with No. 1 singles still playing. UNA's Carlos Matarredona and JSU's Joaquin Vallejo traded 7-6 triumphs before the Gamecocks picked up the 10-5 win in the tiebreaker.

The UNA men will play at Belmont on Sunday. Match time is set for 11 a.m. on the BU campus in Nashville, Tenn.
