JACKSONVILLE – Sydney Flesch overcame two match points in a three-set victory at No. 2 singles to give the University of North Alabama women's tennis team a 4-3 victory at Jacksonville State on Wednesday. The win gives UNA a 2-3 record on the season.

After winning the doubles point and the first two singles matches to take a 3-0 lead, the Lions had to hold on for the win. Three straight JSU victories in singles play tied the overall score to set up the clinching match at the No. 2 position.

Flesch, a sophomore from Huntsville, split the first two sets 2-6 and 6-4. She trailed 6-4 in the final set before winning twice knot the overall score. A 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker gave her and the rest of the Lions the overall victory.

UNA took the early lead after a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and a 6-4 win at No. 1. The Lions completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory at No. 3 and a 1-0 overall lead.

Early in singles play, North Alabama quickly extended its lead. Kalais Going recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6, followed by a 6-3, 6-1 victory by Nina Linke at the No. 5 spot.

The Gamecocks (3-4) were able to rally to stay alive. Straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 1 made the score 3-2 before a 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 tied the score and set the stage for Flesch to clinch the match.

The UNA women will be back in action Friday at Ole Miss. The two teams are set to play a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. in Oxford, Miss.
