LIPSCOMB WOMEN HOLD OFF LIONS

FLORENCE – Lipscomb clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ASUN Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a 6-1 at North Alabama on Sunday. UNA (6-12 overall, 2-4 ASUN) will be the No. 3 seed. The two teams will meet again in the opening round on April 17 in Nashville.
 
The Bisons took an early 1-0 lead by winning the top two doubles positions by identical 6-4 scores. UNA led 5-4 at No. 3 doubles when play was stopped.
 
In singles play, Lipscomb was able to win five of six matches, including two that went to a third set and a double tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot.
 
Wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles extended the visitors' lead to 3-0. Ida Hasselbalch made the score 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position.
 
The remaining three matches each went down to the wire. The Bisons clinched the match by rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2. At No. 1, both sets ended with 7-6 scores. Kate Popova held of Sydney Flesch both times, winning 9-7 in the first tiebreaker and 7-5 in the second.
 
Lipscomb finished the match by rallying for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.
 
Before traveling to Lipscomb to open play in the ASUN tourney, the UNA women will host Western Kentucky on Monday. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the UNA Varsity Tennis Courts.
