SOFTBALL LIONS DROP TWO AGAINST MISSISSIPPI STATE

FLORENCE – Mississippi State rallied for an extra-inning victory in the opener, then picked up a mercy-rule win in the nightcap to come away with two wins over the University of North Alabama softball team Saturday at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium. The two losses leave UNA with a 17-11 record on the season.

In the opener, the Lions took a 7-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning. A leadoff home run started the comeback. The Bulldogs later had two outs before a walk loaded the bases for Fa Leilua, who launched a grand slam to left field, cutting the UNA lead to 7-6.

In the top of the seventh, another solo shot tied the game. Paige Cook tied the game with a homer to left center.  UNA loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but left the potential winning run stranded at third.

After a scoreless eighth inning, MSU pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the ninth. The Lions failed to score in the bottom of the frame.

The loss overshadowed a 3-for-3 showing by Emma Broadfoot. The freshman from Danville drove in all seven runs for North Alabama, including a two-run triple in the first inning, a three-run home run in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth. The performance represented the most RBIs in a single-game  since UNA made the jump to the Division I level.

Sidney Bevis also went 3-for-4 in the first game. Katie Killen and Lexie Harper added two hits each. Megan Garst (7-7) took the pitching loss after starting the game and working the first 8.1 innings. She allowed eight runs off nine hits with eight walks and eight strikeouts.

In the second game, Mississippi State took control with a six-run fourth inning. The Bulldogs led 3-1 before sending 12 batters to the plate in the frame. The Bulldogs hit three doubles and a three-run home run in the inning to grab the eight-run lead and set up the mercy-rule situation.

The Lions were held to three hits in the second contest. Harley Stokes provided the lone run with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.

Four UNA pitchers saw action. Sidney Revels took the loss after starting and working the first two innings. She scattered three hits and also struck out three, falling to 4-2 on the year.

North Alabama will return to ASUN Conference play with a three-game series at Liberty April 10-11.
