UNA CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH SPLIT AT JACKSONVILLE

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – After dropping a 3-1 decision in the opening game, the University of North Alabama softball team rebounded with a 2-1 victory to earn a split Sunday afternoon at Jacksonville. The two games wrap up the regular season for the Lions, who now turn their attention to the upcoming ASUN Conference Tournament.

UNA (19-17) will enter the post-season as the No. 3 seed in the North Division of the ASUN tourney. The Lions will play a best-of-three series May 7-8 at No. 2 seed Kennesaw State. Game times have not yet been set.

On Sunday, offense was hard to come by as the two teams combined to score only three earned runs on the day. In the opener, all five of Jacksonville's runs were unearned .

The Dolphins took the early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. After getting a runner to second base with one out, an error allowed to Jacksonville to take a 1-0 lead.

Another two-out error allowed the home team to extend its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Following a fielding miscue, a two-run double gave the Dolphins a 3-0 lead.

UNA cut the deficit to 3-1 with an RBI-double by Emma Broadfoot in the top of the sixth inning. The Lions, however, would not get another baserunner the rest of the game.

Sidney Revels (4-5) took the pitching loss. She allowed three runs off four hits in five innings of work. Laken Distefano also pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Lions. At the plate, the Dolphins held a slim 4-3 advantage in hits.

The second game was another duel in the circle between UNA's Megan Garst and three Jacksonville pitchers.

After loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third, the Dolphins took a 1-0 lead by scoring on an error. Garst, however, recovered by recording a ground out and two strikeouts to get out of the jam.

North Alabama answered in the top of the fourth with consecutive extra-base hits. Following a leadoff triple by Sidney Bevis, Harley Stokes homered to left field to give the Lions their first lead of the day.

Jacksonville had base runners on in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but could not score. UNA also struggled to get runners home, getting 10 hits but leaving nine runners on base.

Garst improved to 9-9 on the year. She struck out three in the complete-game victory. Georgia Land was 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles. Bevis was also 2-for-4 with a run scored.
