MEN’S TENNIS FALLS AT AUBURN

AUBURN, Ala., – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team opened the 2022 season on Saturday with a pair of losses at Auburn. The Lions came up short 6-1 and 7-0 in the double-header to begin the season with an 0-2 record.
 
In the opener, Auburn (2-0) secured the doubles point by winning all three matches. Singles-play victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 spots then clinched the match for the Tigers.
 
After Auburn extended its lead to 6-0, UNA was able to get on the board at the No. 5 position. Guilherme Diniz recorded the 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 victory for the Lions. The sophomore from Manaus, Brazil posted a 10-4 victory in the tiebreaker.
 
The second match featured a similar script with the home team claiming the doubles point before winning three straight singles matches to clinch. Auburn again grabbed a 6-0 lead with the final point coming down to Diniz at No. 5 singles.
 
Facing a different opponent than the first match, Diniz fell 6-3 in the opening set. He rallied, however, with a 6-3 win of his own to force a tiebreaker before falling 10-3 in the 3-6, 6-3, 0-1 decision.
 
UNA will play at Middle Tennessee on Jan. 21. Match time is set for noon on the MTSU campus in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
