LIONS KNOCK OFF NORTH FLORIDA 70-65

FLORENCE – Four players reached double figures in scoring as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team picked up a key ASUN Conference victory Saturday with a 70-65 home win over North Florida. The second straight win gives UNA a 9-12 overall record with a 4-5 mark in league play.

The win, along with a loss by Eastern Kentucky on the same day, puts UNA in second place in the ASUN West Division.

Against the Ospreys, Hina Suzuki led all scorers with a career-high 23 points. The senior from Hamamatsu, Japan, did most of her damage from the free throw line, connecting on 11-of-12 attempts, including seven in the final minute of play.

UNA was able to rally after trailing by as many as seven points early in the game. North Florida led 29-27 at the half.

The Lions made their move with an 11-4 run early in the third quarter. A basket by Suzuki with 6:18 remaining in the period gave the home team a 38-33 lead.

UNF was able to tie the game at 43-43 with a jumper in the final minute of the third quarter. A three-pointer early in the fourth then put the visitors ahead 46-45.

UNA was able to regain the lead for good with back-to-back treys by Patrycja Jaworska and Skyler Gill. The Lions then had an answer for every run the Ospreys made down the stretch.

After UNF tied the game at 52-52 midway through the fourth quarter, the Lions got a basket in the lane by Jade Moore and another three-pointer by Macey Lee to go ahead by five at the 3:58 mark.

The Ospreys responded with a putback on the ensuing possession, but UNA scored six straight points on baskets by Gill, Suzuki and Lee to push the lead to 63-54 with 1:13 remaining. Suzuki then sealed the win by going 7-of-8 from the foul line.

Moore finished with 13 points for the Lions. Gill added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also added five assists and three blocked shots on the day. Jaworska wrapped up the top scorers for UNA with 10 points.

Jazz Bond led North Florida (10-12 overall, 3-7 ASUN) with 16 points.

UNA will play at nationally-ranked Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. (CST) at Alico Arena on the FGCU campus in Fort Myers, Fla.
