MEN’S TENNIS OPENS ASUN PLAY WITH 5-2 LOSS AT JSU

JACKSONVILLE, Ala., – Jacksonville State won the first four matches in singles play to rally for a 5-2 home win over the University of North Alabama men's tennis team on Thursday. With the loss, UNA falls to 1-10 on the season and opens ASUN Conference play with an 0-1 mark.
 
The Lions led 1-0 after using a comeback of their own to win the doubles point. JSU (6-4 overall, 1-0 ASUN) won No. 2 doubles before UNA came out on top at No. 1 and No. 3. Carlos Matarredona and Chris Zhang won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles to even the score. At No. 3, Fernando Herrera and Nazar Fedoryshyn secured the overall point with a 7-6 victory.
 
The overall lead, however, did not last for North Alabama. The Gamecocks posted five straight victories in singles play to win the match After wins at No. 6, No. 3 and No. 4 gave JSU a 3-1 lead, A 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles clinched the match.
 
The home team added a win at No. 2 singles before Herrera recorded a tiebreaker victory at the top spot to make the final score 5-2. The freshman from Murcia, Spain split a pair of 7-6 tiebreakers in the first two sets. He then posted a 10-1 win in the overall tiebreaker to secure his third consecutive win in singles play.
 
UNA will continue ASUN play at Lipscomb on March 20. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center in Nashville.
