SOCCER LIONS REGISTER FIRST WIN OF UNA'S FULL DI ERA

JACKSON, Miss. -- The University of North Alabama women's soccer team registered a first on Friday, picking up the school's first athletic victory as a full Division I member with a 2-0 road win at Jackson State.

The win was UNA's first season-opening soccer win on the road since 2013 and keeps the Lions' record against Jackson State perfect at 4-0 all-time.

The UNA soccer program also gave the Lions' their first win of the Division I transition era when they downed Alabama State 5-1 on August 17, 2018.

UNA senior Izzi Gurney got the Lions on the board with a goal at the 51:39 mark, heading the ball into the net off a corner kick from Kate Wiseman. Senior Kate Wiseman added an insurance goal at the 70:31 mark off an assist from Kira Schuster to make it 2-0.

"It was a really good win in a tough environment," said UNA head coach Chris Walker. "It rained side-ways for the entire pre-game and the first 20 minutes of the match, then it turned to incredibly hot and humid. But the girls played fantastic through it all. It was a good team effort."

The Lions out-shot the Tigers 9-8 in the contest, with UNA goalkeeper Payton Yates recording five saves in the shutout.

Walker said that Gurney was a key in the win with her physical play, and Yates had several key saves to keep the Tigers out of the net.

It marked UNA's first shutout since the second match of the 2021 season in a 0-0 draw with Southern Illinois. It was the Lions' first shuout win since downing Stetson 2-0 in 2019.
