Box Score OXFORD, Miss. -- The University of North Alabama women's tennis team opened its 2023 season with a 4-0 road loss at Ole Miss on Sunday.
Ole Miss claimed the doubles point and added three singles wins for the four points. The Lions forfeited the number three doubles and number six singles matches, competing with just five players.
"It's always hard to play an SEC team, especially the first match of the season," said UNA head coach Olaya Garrido-Rivas. "For some of our girls, it was their first time to compete. The result is not what we wanted and we are not where we want to be, but at least now we know what we need to work on to be ready for Nicholls State next Saturday."
Ole Miss got a win at No. 1 doubles when Anaelle Leclercq and Ludmila Kareisova defeated UNA's
Martina Paladini-Jennings and
Valeria San Miguel, 6-1. That win, paired with the forfeit at No. 3 gave the Rebels the doubles point.
Ole Miss added singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots to clinch the match.
At No. 2, Ludmila Kareisova of Ole Miss defeated UNA's
Valeria San Miguel 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4, the Rebels' Kelsey Mize defeated UNA's
Nicole Reilly, 6-0, 6-0.
North Alabama was competitive in the unfinished matches. UNA'
Martina Paladini-Jennings dropped the first set 6-4 at No. 1 singles before the match was stopped.
Kalais Going also dropped her opening set 6-4 at No. 4.
The Lions play at Nicholls State on January 28.
