Lions advance to ASUN Championship game with win over Lipscomb

North Alabama makes first ASUN title appearance since 2018

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (November 2, 2023) On to the championship.

University of North Alabama freshman soccer player Adelyn Speight buried a pass from Molly Parham for the lone goal of the match, as the Lions defeated Lipscomb 1-0 in the ASUN Championship Semifinal on Thursday in Nashville. The Lions advance to their first ASUN Championship final since 2018.

With the victory, the Lions improve to 11-5-5 on the season and are set to square off with the winner of No. 3 FGCU and No. 2 Central Arkansas in the ASUN Finals on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. This is the Lions' second-ever appearance in the ASUN Finals, with the first coming in 2018 where UNA fell to Lipscomb, 3-2.

The Lions knocked off top-seeded Lipscomb for the first victory over the Bisons since 2006 on the way to the championship match.

North Alabama goalkeeper Adriana Wright stopped five shots on the match as she earned her 13th shutout of the season. Wright's 13 shutouts tie her with Clemson goalkeeper Hallie Mackiewicz for the most in NCAA Division I soccer this season.

In the 69th minute of the match, Goose Andrews and Parham connected with Speight to break the scoreless scrap and give the Lions a 1-0 advantage. Parham dribbled past several Lipscomb defenders before centering a pass for Speight, who found the back of the net.

The Lions continue to break defensive records, adding another shutout to the total that already represents the program record for most in a season by both a team and an individual, with Wright holding the crown.

With win number 11 on the season, North Alabama ties the mark for most program wins in the Division I era. The previous record was set in 2018 when UNA made their first appearance in the ASUN Championship game.

With the victory, the Lions improve to 4-2 all-time in ASUN Championship tournament matches, with the previous two victories coming in 2018. This marks just the fourth time the Lions have made an appearance in an ASUN Championship final in any sport since the move to Division I in 2018. Soccer holds two of the honors, while softball and men's basketball have each made one appearance.

North Alabama was selected to finish 12th out of 12 teams in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll this season, but finished the regular season in fourth place. UNA will now play for a chance to take home the ASUN Tournament Championship.

The winner of the ASUN Final will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for a chance to compete for the National Championship.
