CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. –
Hailey Jones had four hits, scored three runs and drove in three more to help lead the University of North Alabama softball team to an ASUN Conference double-header sweep of Austin Peay, 6-3 and 8-3.
With the sweep, the Lions are now 26-11-1 overall and 8-8-1 in the ASUN.
UNA took an early lead in the opening game when
Georgia Land drove in Jones with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning.
Austin Peay then went up 2-1 with two runs in the second before UNA tied it with a run in the third.
Gracie Benton drove in Jones with a sacrifice fly of her own. The Governors went back on top 3-2 before Land tied it in the fifth inning with a solo home run.
The game remained tied until the top of the seventh when UNA scored three. Jones solo home run gave UNA a 4-3 lead and a two-run Benton home run made the final count 6-3.
Lions' starter
Maci Birdyshaw pitched four innings before giving way to
Mariyn Waterman, who pitched the final three innings to get the win. Waterman (3-0) allowed no runs on just two hits over the final three innings.
In the second game, UNA took a 4-0 lead with runs in each of the first three innings. In the first,
Felicity Frame walked and later scored on a ground-out by Jones. In the second inning,
Haven Kirby's two-run homer made it 3-0 and Land drove in
Sidney Bevis in the third to make it 4-0.
After Austin Peay scored a run in the third, UNA added a run in the fifth and three in the seventh. Jones drove in Mackenzie Patterson in the fifth with an RBI-single and Patterson's home run in the seventh made it 6-1. Land and Benton then drove in runs with hits in the seventh to make it 8-1,
The Governors got two runs in the bottom of the seventh before Waterman came in to record the final three outs in the circle.
UNA starter
Elena Escobar (9-3) got the win, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings of work.
The Lions and Governors play the final game of the series on Sunday.
