FLORENCE, Ala. -- In her final at bat at Hilda B. Anderson Stadium, University of North Alabama senior third baseman
Taylor Brown hit a solo home run that proved to be the difference in the Lions' 3-2 win over Queens University of Charlotte.
After being honored in a Senior Day ceremony as part of the pre-game festivities, Brown homered to leadoff the sixth inning and give the Lions a 3-0 lead. Queens came back to score two runs in the seventh before reliever
Elena Escobar stopped the threat to preserve the win.
The win in the final game of the series improves UNA's overall record to 28-13-1, and it also helped keep the Lions alive in the ASUN Conference softball race at 10-10-1 with three games remaining. North Alabama entered the day in eighth place in the ASUN standings but moved up to sixth after the win. The top eight teams in the final conference standings will advance to the league's post-season tournament.
Queens starter Autumn Courtney had shutout UNA for 12 innings on Saturday but the Lions finally got on the scoreboard in the second inning of Sunday's game.
Danielle Taitt singled and
Jaiden Farnetti came on as a pinch runner. After Brown was hit by a pitch,
Mckenzie Patterson singled in Farnetti to make it 1-0.
In the fifth inning,
Sidney Bevis singled and later scored on an error to make it 2-0.
Brown's home run in the sixth proved to be the insurance run that the Lions needed.
Mariyn Waterman (4-0) was the winning pitcher for UNA in relief of starter
Maci Birdyshaw. She pitched three and a third innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Escobar earned her first save of the season, striking out the only batter that she faced to end the game. Â
UNA will close out its regular season in a three-game series at Stetson beginning Friday, May 5.
