Lions edged by Chattanooga in home opener

FLORENCE, Ala. (August 20, 2023) – The UNA soccer team fell in their home opener to Chattanooga, 1-0, on Thursday at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.

Chattanooga took a lead in the 34th minute on a goal from Birna Johannsdottir and never relinquished the lead. The Lions earned a free kick from outside of the box with less than five seconds remaining, but the Alice Bussey shot sailed just above the crossbar.

Chattanooga outshot the Lions, 9-7, while also holding the shots on goal advantage, 6-2. The Lions earned four corners to the Mocs one.

Despite the loss, UNA goalkeeper Adriana Wright earned a season-high five saves while only allowing one goal against. Wright has now played all 90 minutes in all three of the Lions games so far, joining defender Briana Eads as the only players to do so.

The Lions have allowed just three goals all season, tied for the fewest in the Atlantic Sun among teams who have played three games.

The Lions are now 0-2-1 on the season, while the Mocs improve to 2-1-0.

Up next, North Alabama leaves for a two-game road trip beginning on Sunday. The Lions take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday, August 27 at 1 p.m. before playing at Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 1. The Lions next home match is on Sunday, September 3 at noon against Alcorn State.
