KENNESAW, Ga. (September 14, 2023) – The University of North Alabama soccer team toppled Kennesaw State 2-0 on Thursday in Kennesaw, Ga. The Lions used goals from
Alice Bussey and
Julia Murdoch to earn a win in the first conference matchup of the season.
Bussey broke through in the 24th minute, netting the opening goal of the match. The Hythe, England native has now scored five goals during the Lions' current four game winning streak.
Bussey now leads the conference in shots (35), shots on goal (18), and game winning goals (4). Her five goals also rank second in the conference.
In the 64th minute, Julia Murdoch met a Giada Aldini cross at the back post to notch her first goal of the season and double the North Alabama lead.
Aldini has now tallied four assists on the season, the most among any player in the ASUN.
The Lion defense held strong, allowing just two shots on goal on their way to yet another shutout. Goalkeeper Adriana Wright and the UNA defense have now tallied five shutouts over the course of the last six games.
North Alabama improves to 5-2-2 (1-0 ASUN) on the season, while the Owls fall to 1-4-3 (0-1 ASUN).
North Alabama has 10 games remaining on the 2023 schedule with Wright just three clean sheets shy of tying the Division I program record for shutouts in a single season. The Alabama-Huntsville transfer has only allowed one goal in her last six matches, having stopped 17 shots in that time span.
The Lion defense has only allowed its opponents to record 29 shots on goal so far this season. That mark is nine fewer than any other club in the ASUN with North Alabama having played one more game than the next closest team.
UNA leads the ASUN in fewest goals against (4) and are allowing their opponents just 0.44 goals per game.
With the victory, the Lions improve their unbeaten streak to six, tying the Division I record set in 2022 when UNA opened the season 3-0-3.
