FLORENCE, Ala. (September 24, 2023) – Florida Gulf Coast University opened up the scoring in the 61st minute on Sunday as the University of North Alabama soccer team fell in a hard-fought battle, 1-0, in Florence at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
The loss ended an eight-game North Alabama unbeaten streak, which dated back to August 24 against Chattanooga. The Lions outscored opponents 11-1 in that stretch of matches.
In the seventh minute of the match, the Lions surpassed the previous record of 391 consecutive scoreless minutes on defense set earlier this season. The Lions would not allow a goal until the 61st minute, setting the new record at 445 minutes without allowing a goal. The goal that ended the previous record was the same one that started the current record — a penalty kick by Southern Illinois on Sept. 7
The lone goal of the match came by way of Eagles midfielder Katharina Oelschlaeger on a pass from Ashley Labbe. This was the first non-penalty kick that UNA had allowed since August 24 against Chattanooga — just over 746 minutes of game time.
The Lions outshot the Eagles 10-6 and earned six corner kicks in the match, with five coming in the second half. Four UNA corner kicks came within a seven-minute span from the 64th minute to the 71st minute. North Alabama tallied three shots off of those corner kicks, but none were able to find the back of the net.
North Alabama has tallied 79 corner kicks on the season — the most in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Lions have earned more corners than their opponent in nine of 12 matches so far this season and have only been out earned on one occasion. The Lions hold a corner kick margin of 79-20 so far this season.
Goalkeeper Adriana Wright and defender Briana Eads played all 90 minutes of the match, making them the only two Lions to have played in every minute of all 12 games this year. The pair have each tallied 1,080 minutes this season without making a trip to the sideline.
North Alabama falls to 6-3-3 (2-1-1 ASUN) on the season, while the Eagles improve to 6-4-1 (3-1-0 ASUN).
The Lions hit the road to take on Lipscomb on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn.
