Women’s Basketball to face Cumberland at home Monday

Lions set for pre-Thanksgiving bout in CB&S Bank Arena

FLORENCE, Ala. (November 24, 2024) – Following six days away from competition, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team returns to CB&S Bank Arena with a Monday matchup against the Cumberland Phoenix. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

The Lions are back in Florence after a two-game slate in the Midwest, returning to the Shoals after matchups against Kansas and No. 21 Nebraska. After competing against the Power Four foes, UNA will face the Phoenix with hopes to get back into the win column. The Lions also look to remain unbeaten at home this season, while facing Cumberland for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with "Voice of the Lions" Benjamin Ray and Kevin Johnson on the call and Chase Glover sideline reporting. The game will also air on WLX Radio with Bryan Neece on commentary. Fans can listen on 98.3 or 103.5 FM in the Shoals or worldwide on the WLX App or website. The "Countdown to Tipoff" radio show begins at 5:40 p.m.

Due to ongoing construction, the basketball parking plan will be revised for the 2024-25 season. Lots A and B will be in the parking lot directly below Flowers Hall. Lot A pass holders will have coned off spots near the staircase. Shuttles will be available to take fans up to the field house lot for entry into CB&S Bank Arena.

Lot C parking will be in the parking lot below the Mitchell Burford Science and Technology Building. Residential Students will have access into Lot C with their hang tags. The public can also park in this lot for $12. Parking at the Bill Jones athletic complex will be unavailable. However, this lot is available as a drop off area near the arena

LAST TIME OUT:  UNA faced a pair of Power Four opponents in Kansas and No. 21 Nebraska, dropping both contests. Jazzy Klinge led the Lions against the nationally-ranked Huskers last Tuesday with 11 points.

LIONS ON THE BOARD:
North Alabama is in the top three of two statistical categories as a team, ranking among the best ASUN teams in free throws and three-point shooting. UNA leads the conference with an 80 percent team free-throw percentage, while second in the ASUN with a 37.3 percent three-point percentage.

CHARITY MAKES A CASE:
Senior guard Charity Gallegos is making a statement in her first year at UNA. Gallegos averages 11 points per game, leading the team while 17th in the ASUN. Gallegos has also been the primary playmaker for the Lions, averaging three assists per game.

HOWARD HEROICS:
Junior India Howard's defensive presence is a mainstay for the Lions, enforcing the paint with nearly one block a game. She is tied for sixth in the ASUN in blocks, totaling four in five games.

SUPER CAM: Junior Cameron Jones is off to a career start in her third year for the Lions. The Broadview Heights, Ohio native is averaging a career-high 9.2 points per game, making her mark as one of the best free-throw shooters in the conference. Her 90.9 percent rating ranks third in the ASUN.

SCOUTING THE LIONS:
Through five games, North Alabama has held early season advantages in three-point percentage, free throws and rebounding. UNA shoots threes at a 37.3 percent clip, compared to 31.6 from opponents. The Lions hit 80 percent from the charity stripe, with 70.9 from opponents. UNA is also outrebounding opponents 180-176 in the first five games against tough competition.

SCOUTING CUMBERLAND:
 Cumberland enters the contest at 2-6 overall, playing in the Mid-South Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Phoenix look to get into a rhythm against the Lions, dropping three of their past four contests. Last time out, Cumberland fell to Life University on the road, 58-47, on Nov. 20. The leading scorer is Kayla Gordon, who averages 12.1 points on 33.3 shooting and 5.8 rebounds – third on the team. The head coach of the Phoenix in his first year is Mark Vaughn.

SERIES HISTORY:
North Alabama and Cumberland will play the fifth all-time meeting with the Lions leading the series, 3-1. Monday will be the first meeting since the 1999-2000 season. UNA is 2-0 in the series when playing at home.
