Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. (February 24, 2024) – The University of North Alabama tennis team wrapped up a solid day in Jackson, Miss. with a pair of wins over Jackson State and Alcorn State on Saturday, improving to 5-2 on the season for the best seven-match start in over a decade.
The last time UNA started 5-2 came in 2011, as second year head coach Olaya Garrido-Rivas and company have won four of the last five matches. Following a 5-2 win at Troy last Thursday, the Lions earned a 4-0 sweep over JSU and a 4-1 win over Alcorn State.
All seven players that played a match got a win Saturday.
Match 1 — UNA 4, Jackson State 0
The Lions picked up the doubles point and did not lose in singles en route to a quick win over the Tigers in morning action.
Freshman Ada Karabacak and senior Kalais Going had a perfect 6-0 sweep in the second flight of doubles, clinching the first point of the match after JSU forfeited the third flight. UNA also had a 4-3 lead in the top flight.
In singles, UNA started with a 2-0 advantage with a forfeit in the sixth flight. This allowed Karabacak and sophomore teammate Stanislava Bobrovnikova to clinch the match with dominant victories. Karabacak had matching 6-1 scores in the third spot, while Bobrovnikova won 6-0, 6-1 in the top flight. UNA led on all other courts at the time of clinch.
Match 2 — UNA 4, Alcorn State 1
UNA continued to roll in the second match, starting with a similar advantage in doubles and winning three of four singles matches to clinch a 4-0 win in the nightcap.
With the third flight forfeited by Alcorn State, Pruijmboom and senior Marta Torres won the second flight of doubles by a 6-1 final for the opening strike.
With just four players for Alcorn State, UNA needed just one point to clinch. The Lions did that and more with wins in the second, third and fourth sports from Pruijmboom, Marta Serra Carles and Valeria San Miguel.
