CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (February 9, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis program secured their third straight win Friday with a 5-2 win over the Chattanooga Mocs in Tennessee.
UNA started early with a straight sweep in doubles before taking four of six singles matches. Junior Nazar Fedoryshyn and freshmen Alberto Altur, Izan Orgiles and Birtan Duran finished unbeaten on the day with two wins across singles and doubles action. Sophomores Lachlan Brain and Federico Scotuzzi also gained a victory with their doubles win.
The Lions improve to 3-3 on the season and pick up their first win over Chattanooga since 2016, back when UNA competed at the Division II level.
Starting with doubles, Brain/Orgiles won the first match by a 6-2 final over Gabriel Castillo/Cortland Grove from Flight No. 3 before Fedoryshyn/Scotuzzi defeated Ryan Mudre/Walker Valentine 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. Duran/Altur rounded out the sweep in doubles with a 7-6 win over Peyton Gatti/Jordan McClure in the top spot.
Chattanooga scored the first point in singles with a straight set win in the top flight, but Orgiles would put the Lions back on top with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Valentine in the fourth spot Fedoryshyn secured a 7-6, 6-2 triumph from flight No. 3 over Grove for the third win.
The Mocs cut the deficit to 3-2 again after a 7-6, 6-2 win by Carr over Scotuzzi from the fifth flight. The final two matches would play to three sets, but North Alabama clinched the winning singles point thanks to Altur's 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over the Mocs' Mudre from the second spot. Duran defeated Gatti in come-from-behind fashion — 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 — to add another point.
UNA Men's Tennis returns home to the UNA Tennis Complex in Florence to take on Troy on Feb. 18. First serve is scheduled for noon.
