Box Score MURRAY, Ky. (March 2, 2024) – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team continued their hot streak in Murray, Ky., defeating the Murray State Racers 4-3 for its fourth-straight win.
The UNA streak was in jeopardy with a back-and-forth affair in Kentucky. North Alabama started by winning the doubles point, leading to the singles portion that saw both teams alternate wins the first four singles matches. It would be senior Kalais Going's win from Flight No. 3 that made the difference in clinching the first win over the Racers in program history.
Following the win, UNA moves to 5-2 on the season, while Murray State loses only their second dual of the season with a 6-2 record.
Starting in doubles, the Lions had a battle in the top flight, but sophomore Stanislava Bobrovnikova and Going were able leave victorious with a 7-5 win over Emma Honore and Natalie Slezakova. Junior Anoek Pruijmboom and the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, freshman Ada Karabacak, secured the doubles point with a 6-4 triumph over Murray State's Marit Kreugel and Paola Campigotto from Flight No. 3.
In the singles' portion, Murray State raced out to tie the team score with a victory by Bureau over Ansorge, 6-1, 6-3, from the second spot. North Alabama regained the lead with a 6-3, 6-4 victory by UNA's Torres over the Racer's Slezakova in the sixth flight.
Murray State tied the team score again from the top spot, with Valeria Chaikovskaia defeating the Lions' Bobrovnikova, 6-3, 7-6. The tie did not last long, with sophomore Valeria San Miguel getting a key win from Flight No. 5 over Annika Pschorr, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
The clinching win for UNA came in thrilling fashion, with Going defeating Murray State's Honore, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 from the third spot to cap a two-win day for the Tauranga, New Zealand native. Battling back after dropping the second set, Going showed the senior leadership and the poise needed to battle back.
Coming up next, North Alabama preps for a two-dual weekend at the UNA Tennis Complex, first facing Mississippi Valley State on March 4 before welcoming Jacksonville State to Florence on March 8. Both duals are scheduled for first serve at 1 p.m.
