Softball honors seniors in regular season finale

Lions locked into No. 5 seed for next week’s 2024 ASUN Championship, will rematch Govs on Tuesday

FLORENCE, Ala. (May 4, 2024) – The University of North Alabama softball team closed the regular season with a 2-0 loss to Austin Peay on Saturday at Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium in Florence, honoring 11 seniors with a special pregame ceremony and holding a special post-game graduation commencement for the six May graduates.

With the loss, UNA secures the No. 5 seed for next week's Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Tournament. Awaiting the Lions in the first round is no other than Austin Peay, who needed a win today to land the eighth and final seed.

The Lions and Govs will rematch in a single elimination game on Tuesday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala. The winner advances to the double elimination round and will play No. 4 FGCU on Wednesday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m.

The Lions finish the regular season with a 34-17 overall record and a 15-9 record in ASUN play. Meanwhile, Austin Peay improves to 23-28 and 8-16 in the conference.

Facing a must win situation, the Govs scored a pair of unearned runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Staff ace Jordan Benefiel tossed the shutout, though UNA threatened with the tying run on base in the seventh inning before a groundout ended it.

Senior Felicity Frame finished with two hits, while fellow senior McKenzie Patterson added a seventh-inning double to try and spark a rally. Junior Hailey Jones had the other hit. Alivia Wilken entered the game late and pitched 4.2 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed.

Frame and Patterson were joined by Haven Kirby, Sidney Bevis, Mariyn Waterman, Cassidy Duskin, Hannah Embry, Jaiden Farnetti, Danielle Taitt, Gracie Piotrowski and former Lions Gracie Benton as the seniors honored Saturday.
