Lions blank Skyhawks in season opener

Aldini scores the lone goal to lift Lions

FLORENCE, Ala. (August 15, 2024) – The University of North Alabama soccer team opened the 2024 season at the Florence Sportsplex on Thursday with home opener win over UT Martin in a 1-0 shutout. Sophomore midfielder Giada Aldini scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute while only playing five total minutes.

Five Lions (1-0) record a full 90 minute frame in goalkeeper Allanah Blye, defender Malin Andersson, defender Montana Merkle, defender Gracie Tyrell and forward Molly Parham. Merkle recorded an assist on the lone goal, while six different players put a shot on goal.

Aldini showed her offensive prowess, while Blye left the Skyhawks (0-1) with nothing to show with five saves.

Blye, a junior transfer from Kennesaw State, made a statement in her debut as head coach Chris Walker seemingly may have found a replacement for 2023 Atlantic Sun Conference Goalkeeper of the Year Adriana Wright, who graduated from the team last season.

Knocking off the rust some, there were 21 total fouls called in the game with 15 slated to the Skyhawks. UT Martin also drew a yellow card in the 47th minute.

The Lions picked up where they left off in the ASUN tournament a season ago, recording a goal for the fourth straight game. UNA won by a 1-0 score in three of those four games.

Looking forward, the Lions will head to Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Ala. on Sunday, August 18 to play famed rival, Jacksonville State, at 7 p.m.
