Lions stumble in 2-0 loss to Austin Peay

Allanah Blye records six saves in ASUN conference loss

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (September 26, 2024) – The University of North Alabama soccer team dropped their second straight road game on a rainy Thursday, falling to Austin Peay State University by a score of 2-0. Senior forward Haley Patterson shot four times with two shots on goal.

The first 45 minutes were fairly quiet for UNA (3-6) and APSU (4-4-2) as the sides ended the first half scoreless. Goalkeeper Allanah Blye did most of the talking for North Alabama, putting up four saves in the first half alone, which is a fifth of her season total. She matched her season-high of five saves last set in a win over UT Martin.

After halftime, Austin Peay found its rhythm behind sophomore forward Aniyah Mack who scored both goals for the Governors. Mack had five goals last year and earned her first two tonight.

The Lions slightly trailed on the stat sheet in every category, including corner kicks at a 7-5 advantage for the Govs. This marks just the second time all season a team has out-cornered the Lions, with the only other being SEC opponent Alabama. This broke a five match streak for UNA of having equal or more corner attempts.

The Govs out-shot the Lions 16-11 and also had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.

As Atlantic Sun Conference play continues, each game has only gotten more physical as a combined 26 fouls were assessed. This is the second ASUN match for UNA in which 25-plus fouls were handed out.

Seventeen players received minutes tonight for head coach Chris Walker. Another captain found their way back into the starting lineup with senior defender Montana Merkle playing the full 90 for the first time in over a month and for the third time this season. Her last 90 minute outing came on Aug. 22 at Alabama.

Looking forward, the Lions stay in the state of Tennessee to play Lipscomb, Sunday Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn. This game is a rematch from the ASUN postseason a year ago where North Alabama won 1-0 en route to the ASUN Championship.
