SOFTBALL TEAM OPENS THE SEASON WITH TWO WINS

COLUMBUS, Ga., – The University of North Alabama softball team opened the 2016 season in impressive fashion Saturday in Columbus, Ga. UNA recorded a pair of mercy-rule victories against No. 1 North Georgia and Augusta State in the first day of the GSC/PBC Southern Softball Showdown.

After opening with a 12-2 victory over top-ranked UNG, the Lions topped Augusta State 12-1. Both games lasted five innings.

For the day, the Lions had eight extra-base hits, including four home runs. In the circle, UNA pitchers Hillary Carpenter and Raven Cole allowed only one earned run each.

In the opener, Brooklynn Clark and Courtney Shields each went perfect at the plate for the Lions. Clark was 4-for-4 with five RBI. Her two-run homerun in the top of the first inning started the scoring and UNA never trailed. Shields was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

After Clark's homer gave UNA the early lead, the Lions added three more runs in the top of the second inning. Back-to-back RBI-singles by Shields and Reagan Tittle gave North Alabama a 4-0 advantage before Clark doubled home another run.

A six-run third inning broke things open. UNA sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame, getting three hits and taking advantage of a North Georgia error.

The Lions quickly loaded the bases after drawing two walks and getting hit by a pitch. Bailey Nelson singled to score a run and Harlie Barkley scored from third on an error to make it 7-0. Danielle Cruickshank scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to seven before another RBI-single by Shields made it 9-0. The Lions wrapped up the scoring in the inning with an RBI-single by Clark and a sacrifice fly by Amy Carden.

Following a single run by North Georgia in the bottom of the third inning, UNA got its final run of the game in the top of the fifth. After leading off the frame with a double, Shields scored on a single to right center by Clark.

The Nighthawks scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

Carpenter (1-0) picked up the victory in the circle. The junior from Hatton scattered six hits and allowed only one earned run with four strikeouts.

Against Augusta, the Lions overcame an early 1-0 deficit to get the win. The Jaguars held the lead until the top of the third inning when a solo homerun by Nelson tied the game. Another homer gave UNA the lead for good. After Danielle Cruickshank reached on an error in the top of the fourth, Shelby Woodard homered to left center to give North Alabama a 3-1 lead. A nine-run fifth inning for the Lions then sealed the victory.

UNA sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame highlighted by Shields' grand slam. Mackenzie Roberts also doubled and drove in two runs in the inning.

Nelson finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored. Shields was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Cole tossed five innings to get the pitching victory in her UNA debut. The junior allowed just two hits with eight strikeouts.

North Alabama will wrap up play at the event with two more games on Sunday. The Lions will face Armstrong State at 9 a.m. (EST) before finishing with host Columbus State at 2 p.m. (EST).
